Layered Jello
Rainbow jello is very simple to make but fair warning that it is time consuming. These bright summer treats are perfect for kids and put on an eye catching display during birthday parties. This is a fun, mess free project for the kids during a break.
Ingredients
-
Assorted 3 oz jello packages - 4 different flavors
[I used raspberry, blue raspberry and lime to match the party theme]
-
Knox unflavored gelatin - 3 packages
-
Sweetened condensed milk - 1 can
-
Hot water
Preparation
-
Colored Layer:
-
Mix one package of any flavor jello (I started with raspberry) with 1 tsp gelatin and 1 cup of boiling water.
-
Stir well till the powder is fully dissolved .
-
-
Transfer into a glass pan of your choice. used a 9 in x 13 inch glass pan.
-
Cool and then refrigerate until set. It usually takes about 30 minutes to firm up. Make sure the pan is on a flat, level shelf to avoid uneven thickness of jello.
-
While the first layer is setting in the fridge, prepare your second layer.
-
Milk Layer:
-
Dissolve 1 envelope (2 tsp) of unflavored gelatin in 1/2 cup of hot water.
-
Add 1/2 can of condensed milk and stir well.
-
Add an additional 1/2 cup of hot water and stir well. Let it cool on the counter.
-
-
Take the pan out of the fridge, make sure the first layer is set fully and then pour the condensed milk mixture over the set jello to form a thin layer. It should just cover the first layer and usually takes about 3/4 cup of the mixture depending on the pan size.
-
Refrigerate until set - usually about 30 minutes.
-
Now, make the next colored jello layer and alternate with milk layer.
-
Repeat till you get all your layers in.
-
Enjoy!
Tips:
-
In this recipe, the milk layers are super thin and there are a 3-4 layers of colored jello. If you decide to use additional layers or would prefer a thicker milk layer, you may need to prepare another batch of the milk layer.
-
If you notice the milk layer thickening while you're waiting for the previous layers to cool, place it over a bowl of warm water. The gentle heat will prevent the mixture from thickening.
